Over the past few years, the FTC Game Design committee had lifted many of the restrictions on the allowed materials for the FTC robots. In this presentation, our team, the FTC 6055 Gearticks, explains how we have taken advantage of the newly allowed robot materials to improve the design and performance of our robot. We reveal how we have used pulleys, non-Tetrix gears, 80/20 aluminum extrusions, spring steel, 3D printed parts, aluminum stock extrusions, and polycarbonate (Lexan). For each material, we discuss advantages, drawbacks, and how we have used it on our robot. We also review our safety procedures while using these materials. Finally, we mention materials we hope to be allowed in the future. Watch our YouTube video for ideas to expand your FTC materials toolkit.
